The world of Karate mourns the passing of Mike Billman, a true trailblazer in the world of karate. An icon of the sport and a highly respected personality of Karate, Mr Billman passed away this week at the age of 78.
Mr Billman began his karate journey in 1969. Over the next 55 years, he made Karate his passion and devoted his efforts to contributing to the outstanding progress of the sport over the years.
A 9th dan karateka, Mr Billman served in his extensive career in Karate as President of the English Karate Federation and Vice President of the British Karate Federation. On the international stage, Mr Billman held crucial roles in the development of karate, including Chairman of the EKF Technical Commission and a member of the WKF Technical Commission. He also served on the World Karate Federation Disciplinary and Legal Commission.
Beyond karate, Mike had a distinguished background in International Diplomatic Security. He travelled the globe, protecting some of the world’s most important figures, from members of royalty to pop stars.

His dedication and contributions to the sport were unparalleled and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched. The significant contributions he made to karate during his outstanding work at both the WKF and EKF Technical Commission had a tremendous impact on the progress of Karate. His passion, dedication and expertise will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His affable personality and his joyous character will always be remembered. Karate has lost not only a revered member of our family but a dear friend.”
The World Karate Federation would like to extend the condolences of all the karate community worldwide to Mike’s family and friends in this difficult time.
